Reactions to U.S. Supreme Court Ruling in Chevron v. Plaquemines Parish

|
Statement from Lauren Sheets Jarrell, Vice President and Counsel for Civil Justice Policy at ATRA

“We’re pleased to learn that today, the U.S. Supreme Court clarified that more than 40 Louisiana coastal lawsuits belong in federal courts — not state courts.

Louisiana’s coastal litigation is ranked the fourth-worst Judicial Hellhole® in the nation — the state’s courts are dripping with bias and unfairness and they’re ill-equipped to handle litigation of such great national importance.

Louisiana trial lawyer John Carmouche is a big campaign donor whose firm is litigating on behalf of Louisiana parishes. He’s steered hefty donations not only to the campaigns of Gov. Jeff Landry, who supports the coastal litigation and maintains close ties to Carmouche, but also to the judge who presided over the Chevron case in Louisiana that resulted in a $744 million verdict.

Litigation with nationwide, and even worldwide impacts, must be handled as such.”
